Hair experts - I want to just dye PART of my hair....?

I have medium brown hair, it has some washed out red towards the end, just what happens to my old colored hair. I plan on getting it cut but beforehand wanted to color it b/c after the salon I'm getting on a plane to leave town.

It's lighter on top %26amp; darker beneath. Do you think I could JUST dye my hair under the first layer? Or maybe use a highlighting cap to pul PART of the hair out for lowlights - but use the darker dye?

Any tips?

professional.. I tried.. home highlights, lowlights all suck at home kits.. been there.. and I tried a hightlight kit once pined up my hair and still got parts colored that I didn't want colored.. but hair color fades a ton.. especially when colored a lot and damage.. like what I did to my hair.. good luck.. use foil.. I used foil once kinda turned out okay.
